We produced the preparations months ahead of time ?¡ìC with my case, to purchase the tickets for the festival and obtain per week off function. When it comes to Kate and Pete Burton, they had to make significantly more complicated preparations for someone to maintain their kids for any week, and get flights to and from Sofia from England. Sonisphere Sofia 2011 was supposed to be an enormous festival, featuring the likes of Alice Cooper, Slipknot and a couple of other bands, but none of them of this definitely mattered ?¡ìC there is only one band playing so far as i was worried, which was Iron Maiden. Impatiently, with great anticipation, i was counting the times backwards before coveted June 21 arrived. Heavy metal and rock D-Day. It might be an amazing expertise, along with a great full week to invest in Sofia having a couple of superior mates ?¡ìC but then we did not rely on the factor named Balkan Music Entertainment.

With seven days to go, it was declared the festival was collapsing, because of numerous elements, and in large part, because of Balkan Audio Amusement themselves due to their poor selection of place and ridiculous pricing. This news of the cancellation felt like a bucket of cold drinking water, then a number of lengthy minutes of sheer disbelief. Was this really occurring? Absolutely they can't mess this up? Just how can the festival be collapsing? Then followed the unavoidable rush of anger, and the expanding desire to vent my stress someplace, or on a person. Anger was followed by the sobering realisation that people had to develop an emergency contingency program, or skip the tour entirely. Consulting the tour dates about the Iron Maiden website, I realised that the only realistic alternative was the Sonisphere festival in Athens, on Next month, or even the 1 at Istanbul, on June 19.

An hour or two afterwards, I was on the mobile phone with Tina Pappas, the head of the advertising and marketing division at Didi New music Massive Start off Promotions, the Greek promoter from the occasion, actually begging her to sort us out with accreditation for the display, so that we're able to attend the concert, and why not ?¡ìC even satisfy the band and take some photos for posterity. Tina, to my amazement, then asserted she was sorry about the cancellation, adding "we could be glad to provide a press pass for the festival". I do not bear in mind packing my bergen actually as quickly as I did that sunny afternoon!

We disembarked in Athens about the early morning of June 17, and made the brief stroll from Syntagma Square down Panapestimiou Road and then onwards to Alexandras Avenue where the coaches had been ferrying hordes of supporters in the direction of TerraVibe Park. I had been thinking of buying a ticket for the festival, in case, as it all seemed too very good to be true. I made a decision to create a fast contact to Tina who reassured me and lived up to her words: "Don't be concerned Nick, just get to the primary gate, your name is on the list". I thanked her, thinking to myself that they is worth her weight in gold. I stocked up on drinking water, a bottle of vodka and that i boarded the coach to TerraVibe.

TerraVibe Park is really a beautifully selected location for a summer time festival, a sizable discipline surrounded by a forest, flanked by a beautiful mountain to the right. It is about 37km north of Athens, towards Malakasa, and also the spherical visit to and from Athens cost seven euro from Stathmos Larissis (Athens central train station) or the Paedeon to Areon Park (which is at Alexandras Avenue and merely across from Revenge of Rock club.)

The venue was finding packed nicely as, eventually, a lot more than twenty five 000 men and women congregated on the festival grounds ?¡ìC a welcome break from running around and trashing the centre of Athens and battling police. Slipknot came out putting on masks and red overalls and their supporters cherished it. I reckon they'd an excellent gig. Personally, I did not appreciate it but that is just me. The line-up from the band was how big a rifle area, and for all those musicians, there was not much songs going on. At least three drummers, and Nicko McBrain could have adopted the 3 of them with one arm tied powering his again. The most known part of their concert so far as I'm concerned was when among their drummers was suspended up together with his entire drum kit. My estimation doesn't matter even so ?¡ìC the main thing is that the people who visited see Slipknot enjoyed themselves. A few of their followers stated they sounded good about the night, and so i guess they did.

Then the lights discontinued, and also the audio of Satellite fifteen rumbled out, followed by El Dorado, two Minutes to Midnight and Coming Home. Iron Maiden were out in force, but to my amazement, everyone else was alternatively subdued. It's hard to create a mosh-pit and slam into people today when everybody seemed chaotic with filming the concert on their cameras or cell phones. What have metal concerts turn out to be these days?

Maiden made an energy-sapping two-hour show, with a set list which contains Dance of Death, The Trooper, The Wicker Gentleman, Blood Brothers, Once the Wild Wind Blows, The Evil That Men Do, The Talisman and Anxiety about the Darkish.

Musically, Iron Maiden were as crisp and meticulous because they are within the studio, and long-term Maiden enthusiasts anticipate absolutely nothing less in the band. Great audio and gorgeous backdrops and lighting effects, as always, even though my only grievance is directed versus Bruce Dickinson who once again were able to insult the Greek followers.
